Can anyone shead some light on these scriptures

Romans 11 v 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. 22Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in [His] goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

Hebrews 6 v 7For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8but if it bears thorns and briars, [it is] rejected and near to being cursed, whose end [is] to be burned.

Hi coatesman.

I believe that verse in Romans isn't referring to individuals. Paul is talking about Jews and Gentiles. The Jews were cut off because of their unbelief. Gentiles are no more important than Jews. So we had better not get proud about that or think we're special because the Jews had a partial hardening so that we could be saved. So I'm certain this is concerning Jews and Gentiles and not individual persons.

Concerning Hebrews, I would say it's about Jews who have heard the gospel, but are persecuted and are in danger of running back to the law. Basically I would say he is threatening them with grace.

NO! I do not believe you can - Hebrews 10 is a great chapter to read. It talks about Christ's sacrifice once for all, and the full assurance of faith, vs.14 says; for by a single offering He has FOREVER completely cleansed and perfected those who are consecrated and being made holy. So, forever is forever.....we can't lose our salvation - there is no way!! We can fall pretty far and others may question our salvation but God remembers our sins no more and he see us as he sees Christ - Amazing, huh!!!!

This is a really great question, and it's probably one that worries many Christians around the world. And unnecessarily so. I agree with what's been said here, that once we have been saved, we cannot lose it. And the reason is because of the nature of the God who saved us, as well as how He saved us and what actually took place when we were saved! The Holy Trinity did all the work. In a nutshell, God the Father gave His Son Jesus. Jesus' body was broken and His blood was shed for the remission of sin. God poured out all His wrath on Jesus, and He became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. He died and the Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead. What part did we play in any of that? What can we add to that? :) Our 'job' was simply to believe.

Any time man gets his eyes on to anything other than the perfect sacrifice of Jesus (such as thoughts that he has sinned too much or that he hasn't done enough to 'maintain' his salvation), he will begin to fear that he's not saved or that he'd better do something to get himself back with God.

But "he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him." (1 Cor 6:17). And as you mentioned, God has given us eternal life, we shall never perish, nor shall anyone snatch us out of His hand (John 10). Such great news!

At the very moment we first believe, our actual nature changes, from sin to righteousness. We become a new creation. I'm saddened that there are many schizophrenic Christians out there who somehow think they can lose this and then gain it back and then lose it and then gain it back... etc.

If only the focus of Christians would remain on the performance of Christ and not their own performance, and upon the truth of who God has already made them to be in Christ, they could save themselves a lot of unnecessary worry and anxiety!

Just one more thought, about the New Creation that we are. This is just one more thing that saddens me when I think that many people in the church don't fully realize what happened when we were saved.

Romans 7 - Paul says that in order to be "married" to Christ, he had to die to the law. He also said, "our old man was crucified with Him (Jesus)..." (Rom 6:6) and "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me..." (Gal 2:20). Col 2:13 - "He has made you alive together with Him..."

The "old man," or the person who we were in Adam... died! He is gone forever. He had to die in order for us to be joined to Christ. And we now really, truly are joined to Christ, one spirit with Him. If we can lose our salvation, then that means that the person who we were in Adam can come back to life somehow! I just don't see any scriptures that speak to that. ;)

Great question, great comments.

I have been benefited heavily by the one major doctrine of Christian faith – Finality of the cross (Finished work of Christ).

Here is why losing one’s salvation is an impossibility:

The only one thing which takes the spirit of God away from us is sin. Wages of sin is (spiritual) death.
Jesus through His death on the cross, took the entire sins away from the eyes of God, never to see them again. By His one perfect sacrifice He accomplished it and cried out from cross, 'it is finished'. Sin issue has been resolved for ever. John the Baptist introduced Jesus to the world by saying the purpose of Christ's coming- lamb of God who take away the sins of the world. When Jesus said 'it is finished' he meant He accomplished this purpose.
His death was the preparatory act before He can give us His ‘life’. Through His resurrection He offers us His ‘life’ and that ‘life’ he calls ‘eternal’. Once we have it, it is there for 'forever’.

So It is God who saves us through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus. We have nothing to ‘do’ there, so we have nothing to ‘do’ to lose it as well.

To add to what Joel said earlier, we are born as a new creation and once we are born, we cannot be ‘unborn’.

So to me, If God saved us, we will not lose it. If we saved ourselves, we may lose it :)
